ROTAVAC clinical trial results
The Government of India’s Department of Biotechnology and Bharat Biotech announced positive results from a Phase 3 clinical trial of a rotavirus vaccine developed and manufactured in India. Data from the trial, presented at the May 2013 International Symposium on Rotavirus Vaccines for India—The Evidence and the Promise, showed ROTAVAC® to have an excellent safety and efficacy profile. UPDATES: In early 2014, ROTAVAC® obtained licensure in India, and in July 2014 the Indian Prime Minister announced the introduction of this indigenously produced rotavirus vaccine into the country’s national immunization program.
In addition, the first-year study results were published in the medical journal The Lancet in March 2014, along with a companion article highlighting the “team science” approach that combined the expertise and interests of highly diverse multinational groups of clinical and translational investigators with a common goal to develop a new rotavirus vaccine for India and the developing world. A related commentary provides helpful context regarding how this collaboration crossed public and private sectors to create a new framework for developing a new lifesaving vaccine for use in low-income countries.
In August 2014, second-year data from the study were published in a supplement of the journal Vaccine, which was focused on rotavirus in India.
